Mewgenics Difficulty Scaling and RNG Mechanics Draw Player Scrutiny
Players report that Mewgenics employs a hidden difficulty adjustment system tied to player skill, forcing experienced competitors to navigate increasingly brutal random events and resource constraints.
Mewgenics, the roguelike deck-builder featuring feline combat and breeding mechanics, has become the subject of intense scrutiny regarding its underlying difficulty systems and random event generation.
Veteran players report encountering what they describe as a “reverse handicap system” that appears to scale challenge based on player competence. One account detailed a sequence of brutal misfortune: a three-option syringe event with all permanent stat reductions, followed by a collapsing vending machine that triggered head trauma, compounded by cancer from licking an in-game orb. The pattern suggests the game actively punishes skill progression.
“At some point when you’re competent enough with builds late game, the only way the game can fuck you over is through events,” one experienced player observed. The game’s reliance on randomness as a primary difficulty lever has driven widespread adoption of Super Luck builds, a passive ability that mitigates chaotic event outcomes.
Players also report frustration with Act 3 pacing. One account noted: “Act 3 isn’t nearly as fun as the first two and most of my team setups are basically the same now. The game has been good value but at this point it feels like it is getting dragged out.” After 150 hours, another player reported diminishing engagement despite unfinished quest lines.
Breeding and cat management systems have drawn criticism as well. Players describe the current interface as inadequate for tracking genetic traits across generations, particularly when attempting to consolidate desirable passive and active skills. One player noted: “Game desperately needs better cat management system and a way to see what upgraded skill versions do.”
Boss design also remains contentious. The Spewer fight in Act 2’s Lab section frustrates players due to its reliance on random projectile patterns. One account: “You can just get unlucky and have all of his random bullets always hits your cats every single time.”
Despite these critiques, the game maintains a devoted player base pursuing achievement unlocks and experimenting with unconventional build strategies, including solo and duo runs with limited team composition.
