CAF's Shameful Silence While Trump Bans African World Cup Fans

Four African nations qualified for 2026 World Cup in the US, but Trump's travel bans and $15,000 visa bonds are locking out their fans. CAF hasn't said a word.

2026 FIFA World Cup tournament in the United States, affecting African fans and nations

FIFA just handed Donald Trump the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize on December 5 at the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, DC. Gianni Infantino gushed from the stage: “This is what we want from a leader – a leader that cares about the people.”

Three days earlier, Trump called Somalis “garbage” during a White House cabinet meeting. “Their country stinks, and we don’t want them in our country,” he said.

The hypocrisy is staggering. But here’s where it gets worse for African football fans.

Senegal and Ivory Coast both qualified for the 2026 World Cup in the United States. Both nations are on Trump’s travel ban list. While their teams can compete, thousands of fans won’t be able to travel to watch them play.

That’s not all. Algeria, Tunisia, and Cabo Verde face something equally devastating: the visa bond programme. African fans from these countries must post refundable bonds up to $15,000 just to get a US visa. No waiver for World Cup supporters. No exceptions.

Consider Tunisia’s gross disposable income per capita: just over $500 annually. A Tunisian fan would need to pay 30 times their yearly income as a visa bond-on top of flights and match tickets.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s ambassador to the US was expelled after the administration made unfounded genocide claims against the nation.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued zero statements. Not one African national federation has spoken up.

This represents a catastrophic betrayal of CAF’s founding principles. In 1964, when FIFA shamefully allocated only one World Cup spot to all of Africa, Asia, and Oceania combined, Ghana’s Ohene Djan sent a defiant telegram backed by President Kwame Nkrumah. He called the arrangement “pathetic and unsound.” All 15 eligible African federations withdrew in protest. Africa stayed out of the 1966 World Cup entirely. FIFA capitulated and granted Africa guaranteed representation.

That single telegram changed everything. Every African team at every World Cup since 1968 exists because CAF once refused to accept injustice.

Today, CAF commands 54 federations, nine guaranteed World Cup slots, and massive FIFA revenue streams. Its president serves as a FIFA vice president.

Yet this powerful organization stays silent while African fans face discrimination.

CAF could act without crushing costs. It could demand conventional visas for all ticketed fans. It could insist matches involving banned nations move to Canada or Mexico. It could join the FairSquare ethics complaint against Infantino for violating FIFA’s political neutrality rules.

Instead, silence.

That silence telegrams a message to Africa’s 1.4 billion people: CAF now bends to powerful governments and ignores inequality, discrimination, and injustice. The confederation that once stood against the world has surrendered.
