Twenty-two crew members from the Iranian cargo ship MV Touska have landed in Pakistan and are set to be handed over to Iranian authorities, marking a rare moment of cooperation between Washington and Tehran amid escalating tensions.

The sailors were flown to Pakistan on Sunday night after their vessel was seized by US forces on April 19 off Iran’s Chabahar port in the Gulf of Oman. Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the crew transfer as a “confidence-building measure” from the United States, suggesting it came through coordinated diplomatic channels rather than coercion.

US Central Command confirmed the transfer, with spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins explaining that the ship had been “intercepted and seized when attempting to violate the US naval blockade against Iran.” The MV Touska, a container vessel operated by the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, has been subject to American sanctions for years.

Six additional passengers from the ship were transferred to another regional country last week. Iranian state media identified them as family members of crew members.

Islamabad emphasized its role as mediator in the arrangement, with the Foreign Ministry stating that Pakistan would continue facilitating dialogue and diplomacy for regional peace. The statement also noted that the seized ship itself will eventually be returned to its original owners following necessary repairs, though custody transfer procedures are still underway.

The development comes as tensions between the US and Iran remain elevated. While the crew’s release and ship’s eventual return suggest diplomatic progress, the underlying disputes over American naval blockades and Iranian shipping operations remain unresolved. Pakistan’s willingness to host the transfer and coordinate with both sides underscores its strategy of positioning itself as a neutral broker in regional conflicts, even as geopolitical divisions deepen elsewhere in the Middle East.
