The fragile truce between the US and Iran is deteriorating rapidly as hostilities intensify around one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes. President Donald Trump has issued stark warnings to Tehran, declaring Iran would be “blown off the face of the Earth” if it attacks American vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Escalation erupted Monday when Iran launched attacks on the United Arab Emirates while the US military claims to have destroyed seven Iranian boats near Hormuz. Trump seized on these incidents during a Fox News interview to demonstrate Washington’s military superiority, emphasizing the stockpiles of advanced weaponry and globally positioned bases available for deployment.

The administration rolled out Project Freedom, a Trump-backed operation designed to escort merchant vessels through the contested waterway and dismantle Iran’s effective blockade of shipping traffic. Admiral Brad Cooper of US Central Command announced that two American merchant vessels had successfully transited, though ship-tracking data suggests overall traffic remains severely disrupted. Cooper characterized the stranded vessels belonging to 87 nations as “innocent bystanders” caught in the crossfire.

Iran fired back with both military action and rhetoric. A South Korean cargo vessel sustained damage from explosions and fire, while fires erupted on two additional ships in the region. Iranian state media dismissed US claims of sinking Iranian warships as fabrication, with military sources insisting Tehran maintains full control of Hormuz.

The UAE confirmed absorbing significant punishment: its air defenses intercepted 12 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles, and four drones. An Iranian strike ignited fires at Fujairah’s petroleum infrastructure, injuring three people. UAE officials pledged proportional retaliation while condemning the unprovoked assault.

Iran’s defense ministry blamed American military adventurism for the attacks, claiming the assault on oil facilities resulted from US policy rather than Tehran’s independent decision-making.

The standoff carries serious economic consequences. Oil prices have climbed internationally, with US gasoline prices jumping from under $3 per gallon before the conflict to over $4.45 by Monday.
